Dr Yumna Dhansay

MBChB, FCPsych, Cert Child Adol Psych, MPhil (Child & Adol Psych), FRANZCP,

Cert Forensic Psych, MFMH

Dr Dhansay is a child, adolescent and family psychiatrist, perinatal psychiatrist, adult psychiatrist and forensic psychiatrist. She completed her undergraduate medical training at the University of Cape Town in 1995 and qualified as a psychiatrist in 2004 when she was awarded fellowship of the College of Psychiatry of South Africa. Dr Dhansay decided to pursue advanced training in child and adolescent psychiatry as she recognised that in order to prevent or reduce mental disorders in adulthood, early intervention and prevention of mental illness in children and adolescents are essential. She was awarded the certificate of advanced training in child and adolescent psychiatry from the College of Psychiatrists of South Africa in 2007 and obtained her Master of Philosophy degree in child and adolescent psychiatry from the University of Cape Town in 2012, with distinction for her research. Her ongoing interest in the prevention and early intervention of mental illness further led to her interest in perinatal and infant psychiatry.

After moving to Australia, Dr Dhansay became a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 2013 and completed advanced training in forensic psychiatry in 2016. She was awarded her Master of Forensic Mental Health with Excellence from the University of New South Wales in 2019.

Dr Dhansay is passionate about the mental health of women across the lifespan and has experience working with women and their families from pre-conception, through pregnancy, the postnatal period, and beyond. Being a child and family psychiatrist, she is also able to assess the parent-infant relationship and support parents who are experiencing difficulties bonding with their baby.

Dr Dhansay has a special interest in providing psychiatric care to those struggling with infertility and its treatment (assisted reproduction including IVF, egg or sperm donation and surrogacy), and pregnancy and infant loss.

Dr Dhansay also has a medicolegal practice, Family Matters Psychiatry, where she offers psychiatric assessments for children, adolescents and families in the family law setting. She also provides assessments for adolescents with mental illness who have come into contact with the criminal justice system. She holds an appointment as an Authorised Clinician with the Children’s Court Clinic where she provides assessments of parenting capacity for Court-referred families.
